Frau Fiber: artist, activist and nomadic textile worker

The Dublin Soceity of Poplin Sewers

Frau Fiber, artist, activist and nomadic textile worker lead a synchronized sewing performance of The Dublin Society of Poplin Sewers in an action re-introducing localized apparel production in Dublin.  The Dublin Society of Poplin Sewers will knock off an everyday working class garment originally imported into Ireland, using Poplin cloth (made in Northern Ireland) and recycled textiles.

Terms of project:
Weavers Square (the site)
Fleeing French Protestant Huguenots, arrived to the Liberties and established the production of Poplin cloth, later Dublin became famous for this product.  Area has economic highs and lows, and now is in the process of gentrification.
The Dublin Society of Poplin Sewers (the participants)
– a fluid group formed by people with an interest in regenerating garment and textile production in Dublin, using locally manufactured and recycled textiles.  The participants were obtained through conversations about the project, a neighborhood flyer campaign, and during the performance if there is an empty production seat, people were invited to participate.  All participants who worked a minimum of one hour were compensated 10 euros for their labor.
Imported working class garment (the object of production)
– knocking off an everyday working class garment currently produced off shore, and reproduced using recycled materials (symbolic of the end of the textile trade when it was only rag pickers), poplin cloth from Atkinsons, currently located in Belfast, founded in Dublin and remnants from Glenaden Shirts of Londonderry (cloth choices are symbolic of the formerly thriving textile and garment industry).
